Heathrow Airport
Heathrow Airport lies within the London Borough of Hillingdon. The Government has announced support for the expansion of Heathrow Airport for construction of a third runway.
As currently framed, the third-runway scheme represents the largest infrastructure project in Europe and would generate profound and far-reaching implications for Hillingdon over a prolonged period. The spatial impacts of airport expansion will be far-reaching, with substantial areas of housing, businesses and local open spaces being lost. The proposals also carry significant environmental considerations, particularly relating to air quality, noise, and the scale of construction activity.
The government have announced that a revised draft Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS) will be published for consultation by summer 2026 and that it intends a final planning decision on expansion to be possible within the current Parliament. The council will take account of the ANPS consultation in plan-making for the Local Plan.
