There may be many reasons, including autism, why children have difficulty developing language skills.
Behaviours you may recognise in your child
- Struggles to use words to express needs, ideas or opinions.
- Uses gestures and facial expressions to supplement words/communication.
- Struggles to understand instructions.
- Repeats words or phrases out of context - often without understanding/meaning.
- Struggles to understand non-literal language, such as jokes and hints.
- Uses verbal reasoning to 'read between the lines' and make deductions.
- Doesn't include enough information (or includes too much detail) when talking about something.
