Sensory issues are common in people with autism.

Behaviours you may recognise in your child

  • Avoids messy or dirty hands and/or feet.
  • Gets upset by busy places and/or cluttered spaces.
  • Gets upset by noise - for example, does not like loud noises and/or specific noises.
  • Gets upset if touched and/or doesn't like the feel or touch of some things - or over-touch, such as gripping, holding tightly.
  • Becomes upset with a particular smell or strong smells.
  • Is overwhelmed by bright lights - or is fixated on bright lights or moving objects.
  • Becomes distressed if the environment is too hot, too cold or varies quickly.
