Petitions

After you submit a petition

We will acknowledge your petition within 5 working days and explain the next steps.

If your petition is valid and meets the required threshold, it will be considered by the council and responded to in the most appropriate way. This may include:

  • a written response from the relevant Cabinet Member within 20 working days
  • a site visit by the Cabinet Member and relevant officers within 8 weeks
  • referral to an existing public consultation if the matter is already being considered as part of a consultation.

For planning application petitions, the issues raised will be considered as part of the planning application decision-making process.

The relevant service area will keep the lead petitioner informed of progress and any updates.

Will my personal information be published?

No. The council does not publish the names, addresses or contact details of petition signatories. If you speak at a public meeting or Planning Committee, your comments may form part of the public record and may be broadcast online.

Can I appeal against the outcome of a petition?

No. Decisions made under the Petition Scheme are final, although separate appeal rights may exist for planning or licensing matters.
