Education of children unable to attend school because of additional health needs

Introduction

Children and young people may miss school due to health reasons. This may be illness (physical or mental health), injury or a planned admission to hospital. The health problem may be time-limited or a child may have a long-term condition.

Most absences from school will be for minor, short-term health problems and absences from school will be short and infrequent. The child's school would arrange any educational support relating to such absences.

However, some children may miss school for longer periods due to health reasons. This document sets out the London Borough of Hillingdon policy for the alternative education arrangements of those children.

This policy sets out when and how alternative education provision will be arranged. The local authority, schools, parents/primary carer, providers and other agencies will need to work together to plan and provide suitable alternative provision. Therefore, this policy also sets out their respective roles and responsibilities.
