Public health funeral arrangements
Once we have confirmed that we are responsible for a funeral, we will either arrange a cremation or a simple burial.
Important: In allowing Hillingdon Council to make the funeral arrangements, both family and close friends are giving up responsibility for, and therefore control of, the funeral to the council. Family and friends will have no input in the funeral arrangements. This includes the location, date and time.
Type of funeral
The type of funeral held is based upon the religious beliefs or wishes of the deceased.
Cremation
If beliefs or wishes are unknown, a simple cremation will be held. Cremated remains or ashes will usually then be scattered in the Gardens of Remembrance at Breakspear Crematorium.
We can arrange to release the ashes to a relative or a person nominated by the relative. If a family member wants to keep the cremated remains, they must collect them from the crematorium.
Please note: Late collection fees may be charged for this and will be the responsibility of the person collecting to pay.
Burial
Burials are usually placed in a common grave that may hold up to 3 (often unrelated) individuals. A headstone is usually added once the grave is full, but that may vary depending on where the grave is located.
Other restrictions may also apply. Please check with our Client Financial Affairs team for advice (contact details below).
Simple and respectful service
Our funeral directors will provide a simple, dignified and respectful service. This will include coffin bearers, a coffin, and transport of the deceased to the crematorium or cemetery. Family and friends will be able to attend the funeral - either in the chapels at Breakspear Crematorium or at the graveside.
Please note: We do no not provide transport to the funeral for anyone wishing to attend.
Additional costs
Hillingdon Council will not cover additional costs for a hearse, flowers, grave marking, wake, or memorial events. These additions cannot be included in a public health funeral or funded privately.
Anyone wishing to place a marker, plaque, or headstone, should contact the relevant cemetery or crematorium to ask about permission. Any related costs will be the responsibility of the person making the arrangements.
