Mutual exchange
You can swap your council or housing association home with another tenant if you follow certain rules and get permission from your landlord. This is called a mutual exchange.
You are not restricted to properties in Hillingdon, 2 or possibly multi secure tenants can exchange their homes anywhere in the country. Probationary tenants are not permitted to do a mutual exchange during their probation period.
Mutual exchange can be a faster way of finding a new home rather than applying for a transfer especially if your transfer application is assessed as a low priority.
To find a mutual exchange property, register with Home Swapper.
If you have found a property and wish to apply, click on "Found a Swap" within Homeswapper to enter Swaptracker and follow the instructions.
Your request may be unable to progress if:
- Your home is too big or too small for your exchange party's needs.
We're only able to accept a mutual exchange where the exchange party will not under-occupy or over-occupy your home. - Your home is adapted for support needs that your exchange party doesn't require.
We aim to ensure our homes meet the needs of our residents. It's important adapted properties are allocated to those who need it. - Legal action is currently being taken against either you or your exchange party's tenancy.
If there is a breach of your tenancy agreement, such as, outstanding rent arrears. - You currently have a tenancy agreement that doesn't permit you to mutually exchange.
Some tenancies don't permit mutual exchanges within the terms and conditions.
Please be aware that either party can pull out of the swap for any reason before the move is completed.
