Reading Buddy volunteers

As part of the National Year of Reading 2026, we’re looking for volunteers aged 14 to 17-years-old who can offer one-to-one or small group support to young readers.

Your time and enthusiasm will help build children’s confidence and develop their literacy skills. By creating a warm, positive and welcoming environment, you’ll play a meaningful role in helping young people discover the joy of reading.

Who can apply?

You must live or study in the borough of Hillingdon and be aged 14 to 17-years-old to volunteer for this role.

We need young people who are reliable, enthusiastic, organised, creative, enjoy working with children, and are able to relate to members of the public of all ages and backgrounds.

You should also have a genuine enthusiasm for reading and sharing stories.

What you can expect

Volunteers will have the opportunity to gain experience of working in the community, teamwork and engaging with members of the public.

Staff will be on hand to support you at all times when you are volunteering in our libraries.
