School travel and road safety

Walking, cycling, and using public transport can help reduce traffic outside schools, improve air quality, make roads around schools safer for everyone, and help keep children healthy.

What can my family and I do to help?

There are lots of things you do to help make children's school journeys safer and healthier:

  • walk, scoot or cycle to school, where possible

  • consider a 'park and stride’ approach by parking a short distance away and walking the rest of the journey

  • encourage your child(ren) to wear bright or reflective clothing during darker months

  • get involved in school travel and road safety campaigns.

Working with schools

Our School Travel and Road Safety (STARS) team works with schools across the borough to encourage safer and more sustainable journeys to and from school.

Our team can provide free support through School Travel Plans, TfL Travel for Life accreditation, road safety education, cycle and scooter training, travel campaigns, and advice on improving travel and road safety around a school.

Eligible schools may also be able to access funding for active travel projects and resources, including bikes and scooters, cycle parking and storage, safety equipment, high-visibility clothing, road safety materials, campaign resources, prizes, and cycle or scooter training initiatives.

Want your school to work with us?

If you work at a school in Hillingdon and would like support to promote active travel and road safety, get in touch with our STARS team by emailing stars@hillingdon.gov.uk.
