About school streets
A school street involves closing the roads leading to school gates to most vehicles for a short period at the start and end of the school day, during term time only. It is designed to create a safer and healthier environment for children and families by reducing traffic, improving air quality, and encouraging walking, cycling, and scooting.
On all school streets, the following applies:
- The scheme is enforced using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. Any non-registered vehicles entering the zone during the restricted times will automatically be issued a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
- Residents who live within the school street zone are eligible for an exemption to allow access to their property during operating hours.
- Access will also be permitted for Blue Badge holders, provided they apply in advance for an exemption.
- School staff, as well as parents or pupils with a valid Blue Badge, can also apply for an exemption.
- Vehicles belonging to visitors, parents/carers without an exemption, and delivery drivers will not be permitted to enter the restricted zone during operating hours.
These measures help to reduce congestion at the school gates, improve road safety, and create a more pleasant environment for everyone travelling to and from school.
