Air pollution

Engine idling

Leaving your engine running when parked (idling) creates unnecessary pollution. Putting a stop to idling is a simple way we can all help to clean up the air that we breathe.

In Hillingdon, it is an offence to idle your engine unnecessarily when stationary. Drivers who leave their engines running risk being fined up to £100.

You can report engine idling by emailing asbinvestigations@hillingdon.gov.uk.

Engine idling initiatives

We encourage drivers, residents and schools to help reduce engine idling across the borough. ‘No idling’ signage is in place outside many schools and at known idling hotspots to remind drivers to switch off their engines.

If you or your school would like to find out more about our work to reduce engine idling or wish to get involved, email stars@hillingdon.gov.uk.

Parent parking pledge

Schools are also encouraged to take part in the Parent Parking Pledge, which helps reduce pollution and improve safety around school sites. Parents and carers are supported to make small changes, such as walking part of the journey or parking away from school entrances.

If your school is interested in taking part in the Parent Parking Pledge, email stars@hillingdon.gov.uk.
