After their defeat in the Battle of Poland they had evacuated first to France and then to the UK. They had left their homes and their families behind. But they had vowed to continue the fight against the Nazis from British soil "For your freedom and ours" as they said.
By the end of the Second World War approximately 19,000 men and women had joined the reformed Polish Air Force in the UK. Many of them were based at RAF Northolt with the numerous Polish fighter squadrons that flew from there. 2,408 were killed in action.
54 were buried at Northwood Cemetery, as well as others that have died subsequently.
