Hillingdon Council is helping eligible families take their first steps into parenthood by providing vital items for their new baby.
Each Babybox contains 22 essentials, including short and long-sleeved bodysuits, socks, a hat, blanket, comforter toy, play mat, baby book, travel changing mat, toothbrush, a thermometer and disposable nappies.
The first boxes were presented to local families by Cllr Susan O’Brien, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults, Children, Health and Care at a launch event at West Drayton Family Hub today (Thursday 27 August).
Babybox is aimed at families who may need extra support in the early stages of parenthood, including younger parents, care-experienced parents, families with limited access to financial support, and those already receiving support from family help or social care services.
Funded using a grant from the Department for Education, the boxes are available through referrals from the council, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, Hillingdon Hospital, or Home-Start Hillingdon.
Durga Kolipaka, from Hayes, was one of the first recipients and said: “It’s really helpful, especially for young parents, and I really like the fact that everything is brand new because a lot of those items are quite expensive. It’s a great initiative from the council.
“It gets you off to a good start and it takes a few items off my list which I need to purchase, so that’s a great help.”
Romy Peache, also from Hayes, said: “It’s a great idea from the council. The baby sleeping bag, thermometer and maternity pads will be really helpful.”
Georgina Bunuwaa, from, West Drayton, added: “I’m so happy because it’s very useful stuff in the box – I’m actually quite shocked because it’s a lot.”
Cllr O’Brien said: “Having a baby is such an exciting and special time, but we know those first few weeks can also be a big adjustment for parents, both emotionally and financially.
“We want our families to feel supported as they start this new chapter, and our Babyboxes are a simple, practical way of helping with some of those everyday needs.
"Alongside this scheme, our family hubs offer a range of support and guidance for local families, helping ensure children get the best possible start in life and parents know where to turn when they need advice or assistance.”
