Hillingdon Council has launched a consultation, under the government’s revised planning process, as the first stage towards preparing its new Local Plan.
The Local Plan ‘scoping consultation’ gives residents the opportunity to share their views to ensure the final document reflects the needs and desires of local people.
As the demand for additional homes increases across the country, and the government and the Mayor of London apply more pressure on local authorities to meet growing housebuilding targets, the council remains focused on protecting its green belt land and robustly responding to any plans to expand Heathrow Airport.
The Local Plan is a vital planning document, which sets out the borough's vision for the next 15 years. It shapes how land is used, including where new homes, businesses and infrastructure are located, alongside how they should be designed and built. It also helps to oppose unsuitable developments while safeguarding the borough's heritage assets, town centres, neighbourhoods and natural environment.
Following significant changes by the government to the planning system the council was required to restart the update to its Local Plan, which had previously begun in 2024.
Cllr Nick Denys, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Property, said: “Updating the Local Plan will help us continue to support well planned, locally informed, and sustainable development, while resisting inappropriate housebuilding imposed on us from afar.
“A robust, up-to-date plan will be crucial to ensure future construction reflects residents' priorities and preserves the unique character of Hillingdon.
“Our priority is to deliver the right homes, in the right places for you, while protecting our green spaces, encouraging economic growth and ensuring the infrastructure is in place to support residents.
"This is an important opportunity for you to share your views, and I would encourage everyone to take part and help shape the future of our borough."
The council is hosting an online information session on Tuesday 21 July, 6.30pm to 8pm to introduce the Local Plan and the purpose of the consultation. To sign up, email localplan@hillingdon.gov.uk.
Paper copies of the consultation documents are also available at Uxbridge, Botwell Green and Ruislip Manor libraries, and at the Civic Centre.
The consultation will run until Friday 21 August. Residents will be able to share their views online at www.hillingdon.gov.uk/localplanconsultation.
