Bessingby Park flood resilience project

Bessingby Park after Phase 1 construction, showing completed flood storage basins.

In 2022, the council built 2 attenuation basins (flood water storage areas) to temporarily store flood water during periods of heavy rainfall. This helps reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

Following feedback from local residents, the council is proposing a number of improvements to further reduce flood risk.

Planned improvements

The proposed works are scheduled for early October to early November 2026 and will:

  • deepen and widen the existing attenuation basins where space and underground services allow
  • reuse excavated material to create a flood protection bund along the southern boundary of the park
  • restore a low section of the riverbank where flooding has previously been reported
  • extend the bund across the park entrance to remove potential gaps in flood protection
  • create gently sloping access routes to ensure the park remains accessible for all users.

These improvements will increase the amount of flood water the site can store and help provide greater protection for nearby homes and businesses.
