As most fires in the home start accidentally, it's important to carry out a few simple safety checks.
Every home should have at least 1 working smoke alarm. They can be bought at most supermarkets, DIY stores and electrical equipment shops.
Steps to be prepared
- Fit at least 1 smoke alarm on each level of your home and test them weekly.
- Plan an evacuation route out of your home in case your normal way out is obstructed - ensure this route is kept clear of any obstructions and notify all members of the household.
- Ensure that all members of the household are aware that, in the event of a fire, it is important to stay low to decrease smoke inhalation.
- Keep all doors and windows closed that you do not need to open. This prevents fire from spreading as quickly as it would if you left them open.
- Prepare a grab bag and leave it in an easily-accessible place, so you can collect it in the event of evacuation (but only when safe to do so).
Recovery
Once a fire has occurred the fire brigade will assess your building and advise you of any apparent structural or other defects.
